Of all metals, titanium is one of the best frame materials available. It's lightweight, durable, and corrosion-resistant. Titanium also is hypoallergenic—so it's a great choice for people who are allergic to other metals. Titanium is strong, easy to adjust, and comes in an array of colors. Titanium eyeglasses are great for hot, humid environments because of their strength. Titanium eyeglasses are perfect for active lifestyles or those with prescriptions that require thicker lenses.
Drill Mount Frames
Rimless Eyeglass Frames (also referred to as drill mount or 3-piece mount)
For typical frames, the lenses are cut to fit into the groves of the plastic or metal eye wire. The lenses for rimless eyewear are held to the nose and ear pieces by screws drilled through the lenses. The materials for the frame are the same as regular frames (nickel alloy, stainless steel, flexible memory metal, titanium, and/or plastic). They are available in many prescriptions and shapes and sizes.
Three-piece mount frames give the appearance of not wearing glasses, especially if an anti-reflective coating is added to the lenses. They are light-weight, particularly if they are titanium frames with polycarbonate lenses. Polycarbonate and Trivex lenses are recommended. These lens materials are more resistant to cracking when drilled, whereas plastic lenses may crack and create a star pattern at the drill point.Rimless frames may be more expensive and more delicate than full or semi-rimless frames. Extra care must be taken with this type of eyewear and it may require routine adjustments by a licensed optician.
Stainless Steel Frames
Stainless steel frames and surgical stainless are another alternative to titanium. Qualities of stainless steel frames include light weight, low toxicity and strength; many stainless steel frames also are nickel-free and thus hypoallergenic.
Stainless steel is readily available and reasonably priced. It's an alloy of
steel and chromium, and may also contain another element. Most stainless steels
contain anywhere from 10 to 30 percent chromium, which provides excellent
resistance to corrosion, abrasion and heat.
